Dr Manish Patwardhan (M.D. - Ayurveda) Training with a Difference Ayurveda is becoming slowly popular as a spa modality and more spas are including Ayurveda in their menu. When I say this we have to understand that if any spa includes Ayurveda in their spa Menu, one of the most important things as a prerequisite would be well trained Ayurveda staff. When I say Ayurveda staff, I don't want to say staff of Indian origin. Staff of any origin should be completely trained in Ayurveda before including Ayurveda in the spa Menu. The training in Ayurveda differs from other modalities. Whilst the therapists learning any other type of Massage would learn anatomy & physiology before starting with massage techniques with practical hands on training. Ayurveda massage training can be performed only after the therapist understands the various common & simple concepts like "The Five Elements," "Three Energies (Dosha)", "Prakruti (Constitution)" etc. This understanding is extremely important as the massage technique and the products used for the massage will differ based on various body types / constitutions. So knowledge of understanding the clients from Ayurvedic perspective is of utmost importance before starting any spa therapy. Another important thing is to understand the properties of the herbs, that make the various products used for Ayurveda spa therapies. So in other words thorough product knowledge is very important part of training in Ayurveda spa therapies. Now when we talk about other modalities we usually talk about 3 or 4 different treatment modules that can be incorporated in the menu under that particular modality. When we look at including Ayurveda in our spa menu we need to understand & have clarity about what type of spa we have, which type of guests are we looking for as probable Ayurveda clients etc. This is because there can be a huge list of Ayurveda Treatments on the menu even if we think of having basic treatments on the menu. We can easily think of at least 25 to 30 different treatments that can be incorporated in the spa menu. Just to name a few, Ayurvedic Massage ( Abhyanga), Ayurvedic Head Massage (Shiroabhyanga), Ayurvedic Foot Massage ( Padaabhyanga), Ayurvedic Powder Massage ( Udvartana) - specially done for Cellulite & Obesity, Shirodhara - Special treatment done for Relaxation, Stress Relief, Hypertension, Psychological conditions etc. Kati Basti- Special treatment for low backaches, similar types of treatments done for pain in the neck, pain in the knee joints, heart, eyes and so on also form part of the list. And not to forget beauty treatments like Mukha lepa (Facial), Angalepa (Body wraps) and many others. For those who are interested in training in Ayurvedic practice we offer extensive and specialized training in all these treatments which that start at a full time training of about 150 hours. We offer this training under the guidance of specialized trainers & Ayurveda practitioners who have a minimum training of 6 to 9 years and experience of similar duration. We also certify the staff trained in Ayurveda on successful completion of the training and can assist in designing Ayurveda menus as per the specific needs of the client.
