Welcome

to the January/February Newsletter. We've waited a few days to send this one out because we have some very exciting workshop additions, so don't forget to check out the Workshop Calendar. Spa College is constantly evolving. Classes change with each experience and with the needs of the students. We continue to respond to the demands in the health and wellness arena by adding new courses and locations.

What makes Spa College different for you is that rather than having a fixed location we bring our workshops to you. We seek out appropriate venues where your interest is and conduct a training there. So you will determine how our calendar unfolds.

You will also find that the nature of our classes sets us apart. Our workshops are designed to empower, transform and involve. They are very hands-on and experiential with minimal lecture time and very interactive.

If you are interested in reading back-issues of our newsletter, here they are: Spa College Eletter.

Costa RicaNews Cast: We welcome more cutting edge facilitators and their workshops to our ranks: Karyn Brower, Alaya Babineau and Deidre Sommers. More about them in this newsletter.

Check out our new workshops. Whether seasoned specialist or novice you can find the right course for yourself here. Continuing education and training is especially indicated if you are working in the spa industry. All over the world opportunities are opening up for practitioners to participate in the health, wellness and beauty business.

Now, more than ever before resorts and hotels are required to have spa facilities because travel agents and guests require them as standard amenity.

If you are an operator, consider customizing a spa training to suit your personal needs. If you are a practitioner, consider widening your horizon and giving yourself a new perspective.

What is Self Healing?

Diedre SommersDeidre Sommers writes on her experience with her work as a therapist and bodyworker.

"The medical approach is often about finding a ‘cure’ or a halting of symptoms, which is often only a temporary cover-up of the underlying cause or issue. And so we miss the opportunity of allowing the apparent ‘problem’ to be revealed as the gift that it ultimately is."

The Breath within the Stone

Karyn Brower goes into detail on the art of hot stone massage in this article previously published in Massage Magazine. Karyn's approach to using hot stones is founded in her own experience in working with this medium and is based on the body's energy vortexes, the Chakras.

In this essay, she gives us insight into the inherent qualities of stones and their effect on the body and brings Ayurvedic principles into her work.

She investigates the different applications, types and facets of different mineral compositions as well as colors and forms.

Deidre is the founder of Alchemy of the Heart, a sanctuary for conscious evolution in Calistoga, Ca. since 2002

Onsite in Antigua

Antigua, a tropical Caribbean island in the West Indies is a mirror of some of the challenges the spa industry is facing as it continues to expand throughout the world.

Typical resort destinations are hurrying to catch up with the trend by either renovating and repositioning outdated facilities or building completely new ones.

One can also see niches being filled, whether that is the spa on a charter or privately owned luxury yacht or a stand alone day spa. Even the smallest boutique hotel has some reference to health and wellness services - sometimes a designated villa or at the very least it takes on the appearance of having a spa by offering in-room services from a mobil provider.

On a recent extended trip to Antigua to set up spa-college classes, we were able to interview many spa directors and managers on the island to catch their perspective of the business and talk to them about their challenges.
